British Deputy High Commissioner, Caroline Rowett, met with Patiala Deputy Commissioner, Sakshi Sawhney, today in Patiala to discuss various matters, with a focus on sports. During this meeting, they explored the potential for a partnership between British sports universities and Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, aimed at facilitating the exchange of best practices.
Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney informed British Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett that the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, places special emphasis on sports. She emphasized the potential for enhancing the field of sports through collaboration between Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, Patiala, and British sports universities. Therefore, the possibilities of bilateral cooperation between these universities were thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner mentioned that the sports department is in the process of establishing a sports nursery in the Ghanaur area, with an estimated cost of approximately 1 crore rupees.

During their conversation, Caroline Rowett commended Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s initiative, ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Dian,’ aimed at promoting sports in Punjab. Rowett expressed her enthusiasm for the forthcoming sports nurseries in Patiala and the commendable efforts by the District Administration. She also pledged support from the British High Commission.
The team including Kavya Agarwal, a student, who has been declared the winner of the UK’s ‘Deputy High Commissioner for a Day’ contest and Tanya Sood, was adjudged as the runner-up in the same competition, along with Rajinder S Nagarkoti

Kavya and Tanya had the unique opportunity to engage with British Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett and joined in a thought-provoking meeting with Patiala Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, during which they delved into the topic of women in leadership and exchanged ideas on promoting women’s rights and empowerment.
Before this meeting they had an enriching interaction with Punjab Police Constable Gulab Singh Shergill, a passionate advocate for women’s cricket in rural areas, and his enthusiastic group of young female cricketers.
